Embedded Board Bring-Up

Complete hardware board bring-up from bootloader initialization to Linux kernel boot with comprehensive peripheral validation.

Overview

Complete Hardware Platform Validation

We performed a complete board bring-up for a custom ARM-based industrial control platform, starting from bare metal hardware validation through bootloader initialization, kernel porting, and full peripheral driver integration and testing.

The project involved bringing up a new PCB design with multiple communication interfaces (Ethernet, CAN, RS485), memory subsystems (DDR4, eMMC, NOR Flash), and industrial I/O peripherals requiring real-time performance.

Challenge

Complex Hardware Validation Requirements

  • First Silicon Challenges: New custom PCB with potential hardware issues requiring detailed debugging
  • Memory Configuration: DDR4 timing calibration and eMMC initialization with proper voltage sequencing
  • Multi-Interface Support: Bringing up Ethernet PHY, CAN controllers, and multiple UART interfaces
  • Boot Reliability: Implementing redundant boot with A/B partition scheme and recovery mechanisms
  • Real-Time Requirements: Ensuring deterministic timing for industrial control applications
Solution

Systematic Bring-Up Methodology

Our team executed a methodical bring-up process from hardware validation to full system integration:

Hardware Validation

Performed power rail validation, clock signal verification, JTAG debugging setup, and memory timing analysis. Used oscilloscope and logic analyzer to validate signal integrity and identify hardware issues.

Bootloader Integration

Ported and configured U-Boot with custom board files, implemented DDR4 calibration, configured pinmux and clocks, and added redundant boot support with automatic fallback to recovery partition.

Kernel Porting

Created custom device tree with all peripherals, ported and tested kernel drivers for Ethernet, CAN, I2C, SPI, GPIO, configured real-time kernel (PREEMPT_RT), and validated interrupt latency requirements.

Peripheral Testing

Developed comprehensive test suite for all interfaces, implemented stress testing for memory and I/O, validated thermal performance under load, and created automated regression tests for CI/CD integration.
