Enterprise Networking Protocol Stack

We implemented a comprehensive suite of Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking protocols for an enterprise network equipment manufacturer, enabling advanced switching, routing, and overlay networking capabilities for data center and campus network deployments.

The solution included VLAN tagging and trunking, Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP/MSTP), dynamic routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, IS-IS), MPLS label switching, and VxLAN overlay networking with EVPN control plane.

  • Protocol Complexity: Implementing RFC-compliant protocols with proper state machines and interoperability
  • Scalability Requirements: Supporting thousands of VLANs, large BGP routing tables, and high route churn
  • Convergence Time: Achieving fast convergence during topology changes and link failures
  • Multi-Vendor Interop: Ensuring compatibility with Cisco, Juniper, Arista, and other vendor equipment
  • Performance Optimization: Maintaining line-rate forwarding while running complex control plane protocols
Solution

Comprehensive Protocol Implementation

Our networking team developed a complete L2/L3 protocol stack with enterprise-grade features:

Layer 2 Protocols

Implemented 802.1Q VLAN tagging with Q-in-Q support, RSTP/MSTP with fast convergence, LACP for link aggregation, IGMP/MLD snooping for multicast optimization, and LLDP for network discovery.

Layer 3 Routing

Integrated FRRouting for BGP-4 with route reflector and confederation support, implemented OSPF v2/v3 with area hierarchy, added IS-IS for carrier networks, and developed ECMP for load balancing across multiple paths.

MPLS & VPN

Implemented MPLS label distribution with LDP, developed L3VPN (RFC 4364) with VRF support, added L2VPN/VPLS for layer 2 connectivity, and integrated RSVP-TE for traffic engineering.

Overlay Networking

Developed VxLAN encapsulation with hardware offload, implemented EVPN control plane for MAC/IP learning, added multicast and ingress replication support, and integrated with SDN controllers via BGP-EVPN.
